Ground Transportation in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is definitely the kind of destination that does not require a stateside travel agent or detailed advance plans. Its possible to have a really good vacation with just Internet research, an up to date tourist guide, and a deal on airfare.

Once in Costa Rica the challenge is to navigate the country after getting from the airport to the hotel. Expect to pay about $25 for an airport taxi to downtown San Jose, and then $2 to $5 for any trip near the city center. No need to call a taxi because they are very common, and there is no formal street address system anyway.

One of the better options for intercity transport in Costa Rica is a company called Interbus, which operates a fleet of shuttle buses that do door to door transportation between hotels. Interbus will only stop at hotels, and its a comfortable way to get between San Jose and the beach or countryside.

Another option is Grayline Costa Rica, which follows a fixed pickup route of hotels in San Jose. The vans accommodate small groups, so its possible the ride will be shared with a few other tourists. One way per person to Jaco is $29, and the majority of destinations are $39.

Consider calling ahead to reserve a ticket, and also check out their many tour packages for both transportation and activities. One way from San Jose to Jaco is $27 per person.

Finally those traveling light and cheap can use the public intercity bus system. Many of the buses leave from the vicinity of the “Coca Cola”, which is located between the Central Market and La Merced church on the west side of downtown San Jose. The bus station for destinations on the Caribbean is located closer to the center of downtown San Jose.
