Travelers Checks Obsolete

Travelers checks another form of antique money.

Once upon a time travelers checks were the preferred currency of travelers worldwide given their security and relative ease of acceptance. Unfortunately travelers checks are not welcome in Costa Rica. Fraud is rampant and consequently the banks impose a minimum thirty day hold on check deposits. So, a hotel operator may be reluctant to tie up their cash flow for a month just because a guest needs spending cash.

The American Express Travelers office in San Jose is not located in an area that is convenient to tourists, and no one ever reports a positive experience. Despite propaganda to the country those who loose travelers checks in Costa Rica should not expect replacement cash until they actually return to the United States.

The best plan is to bring cash to Costa Rica and choose a reputable hotel with an in-room safe.
